Andreas Scholz - Image engineering solutions and technical visual effects

About me

Hello, my name is Andreas Scholz. I am a computer scientist, software developer/engineer, and technical 3D artist specializing in visual effects (VFX). Since childhood, I have been deeply passionate about the world of computers and graphic arts, a love nurtured by my creative family environment.

My journey began in the 1980s with a C64 and the BASIC programming language. Later, I upgraded to an Amiga 500, and in 1994, I acquired my first PC: a 486-DX40 with an impressive 4 MB of RAM. During this time, I spent countless hours drawing and, in true analog fashion, writing the rules for my own role-playing game. My professional journey into the graphic arts began in 1993 when I trained as a cartographer, working traditionally with ink and pen. Over the following years, I pursued this graphic path while witnessing the digital revolution. In 2002, I embraced digital graphics through a program in *Creative Media* at a private educational institution.

As a freelancer in graphics and web development, I also delved into 3D animation and visual effects. My academic journey culminated in a bachelor's degree in computer science (2012–2017), where I specialized in artificial intelligence, image processing, and 3D graphics. This education bridged my dual passions for computer science and graphics into a cohesive expertise.

After graduation, I joined the OST – Ostschweizer Fachhochschule (formerly NTB) as a research assistant, initially at the Institute of Engineering Informatics and later at the Institute for Microtechnology and Photonics. At the Machine Vision Group, I conducted practical machine vision exercises for photonics and physics courses, while also managing projects and feasibility studies in machine vision and optical quality assurance.

Since September 2024, I have been building my company, Industrial Vision and Simulation, which offers innovative computer vision solutions for production industries and research institutions.

Beyond my professional work, my hobbies include computer games, traditional pen-and-paper role-playing games, and photography. I am also fond of rodents and chocolate—though I only consume the latter. Pragmatic and introverted by nature, I humorously realized during the 2020 pandemic that my usual lifestyle aligns closely with "quarantine."

I am a native German speaker with strong English proficiency. My primary programming languages are C++, Python, and JavaScript, though I also have experience in Java, PHP & MySQL, Lua, VBA, HTML & CSS, C#, and foundational knowledge in R, MATLAB, and Prolog. Earlier in my career, I worked with BASIC, ActionScript (Flash), and Lingo (Director).

On the creative side, I am skilled in 2D software like Photoshop, Illustrator, and Krita, as well as 3D tools such as Maya, Houdini, ZBrush, and Blender. Additionally, I use DaVinci Resolve Studio and various video/audio editing tools, alongside many custom scripts that streamline my workflow.
